Description

"Down here, Kye stretched out his hand hoping for a touch of a hand he knew. Of a hand he kissed of a hand he loved of a hand he held close to his belly and close to under his belly. A lamppost dripping with dark liquid smog responded to the invitation. The bus stop was a large and gaping wound waiting for a bandage. Kye's charity not being up for it, he changed course. There was a time it did not matter what course he took. When every path lead to the Rome of unashemed self discovery. Or an unashamed discovery of another, or of something, or of an emotion or of emotion. But now, every step he took was one of hesitation, of scrutinizing the pavement for excrement." --From the novel Kye By Lukas Tomin **** For the third night in a row I've been haunted by that novel and Prague's own stainless-steel weather. That's how it looks: rolling clouds so dark and gray that they look as if they'd ring if you strike them. With so much moisture or the promise of moisture, it's no wonder that all of the metal in town doesn't rust. But today surprised me. The sun attempted, rather valiantly, to come out, and I caught it at about 6 am. I went out to get bread. Lazarska street was empty, except for pigeons pecking at the paving stones and ONE lone city worker, a track sweeper. Armies of these guys come out every day and sweep debris and cigarette butts from linear notches that define the city's countless tram tracks. You see one or two of them, in their red overalls, sometimes with cigarettes hanging precariously between their lips. Sometimes they pause in their work, survey what lies ahead of them, and get back to it, while scores of others drive sidewalk sweepers. Pigeons hate them. I'm in the habit of taking my camera with me. Everywhere. And I was glad of strong batteries this morning, as I caught a lone track sweeper, going about his daily chore. He wasn't smoking a cigarette as I'd seen the others do, but like the others, he just worked...quietly and with an air of ritual boredom. I thought of characters in an unwritten novel, and kept company in my head with Lukas Tomin's ghost. Kafka's been a bit quiet lately--probably off on holiday. **** As always, thank you for viewing and reading, and hopefully THIS image of Lazarska Street lives up to the feelings that it inspires in me either late at night or early in the morning. Happy viewing and thank you for your comments and views.

I love the sweeper, going about his job, his red coat is a wonderful contrast to the stark buildings, though there is a bit more color in some of the windows. As always, your narration tells us the story and it adds so much to the foto!!

Praque.. like my city The Hague, known for it's fantastic architecture from the late 19th, early 20th century. Of course there is more.. but at the old town it is the Happy Epoche and not a miracle you take the cam with you

There is no doubt. Your portrayal of Lazarska most certainly does live up to your feelings--and beyond, as it inspires me just from your beautiful word choices throughout your descriptions, in accordance with a beautiful image. You've captured a special time, as your lighting is exceptional. There is a sensational mood and atmosphere created here; as I feel a sense of belonging, and even though I have never been here I feel as though this place is inviting and familiar to me. The very architecture of the buildings, the "old" look is something that I find very special, especially living in Toronto where everything must always be kept "up to date", severed by technology; the constant building and rebuilding.... Extremely original and unique image--- with a spectacular perspective... you've captured so much here for us to admire...... Chip, my friend.... your work is beyond words, yet again.

How a city which hesitates between rehabilitated its aspect of old city and to discreetly integrate the evolutions of an essential modernization! EXCELLENT SHOT !!!

I also like this shot. The red-overall worker is a really nice touch. I think I'm enjoying your ruminations on this city at least as much as the photos.
