Description

Captured 10/28/07 at the beautiful Joint Forces Training Base on the beautiful Los Alamitos Army Airfield in beautiful Los Alamitos, California. Exactly one month ago today I ventured out, accompanied by my son and his girlfriend, to the annual Wings, Wheels, Rotors & Expo show held at this facility, to once again capture the awesome and overwhelming display of many things vehicular, whether they travel by air or by land. I mean classic cars, model planes, sailplanes, civilian and military airplanes and helicopters, military trucks, tanks, jeeps, mobile howitzers, ad infinitum. Can we say, Seventh Heaven, baby? Combined with last year's visit, I believe I have around 550 photos of this show sitting in my hard drive, just pleading to be posted. I know I'll get some static on this, but there's more to life than roses, forests and sunsets. Pictured above are visitors taking a break from the hot sun this late October day by seeking shelter under the wings and big Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines of a giant Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. Just like a mother duck providing protection over its ducklings. Incidentally, it was warm enough to give me an annoying sunburn on my neck and hands. Oh yes, since the show is/was free, it was quite crowded with visitors. Anyway, here's some info on the airplane: a high-wing, 4-engine, T-tailed military-transport aircraft, the multi-service C-17 can carry large equipment, supplies and troops directly to small airfields in harsh terrain anywhere in the world day or night. The massive, sturdy, long-haul aircraft tackles distance, destination and heavy, oversized payloads in unpredictable conditions. It has delivered cargo in every worldwide operation since the 1990s. And talk about getting the biggest bang for your buck...its crew consists of just three: two pilots and a loadmaster. Better viewed full size. Thanks for dropping by!

I can not help not to smile on this shot in a good way. Love the ppl use a shelter under the wing, like mother goose shading a younglings from a hot sun. I am sure it was a fun day.

Quite a good photo you give us to view and appreciate. I have been one of those sitting beneath the wings to find shade. The umbrella sellers also do well.

I knew Liebeck who designed the wing. He was a young genius when I met him and not sure if I was worthy. The F-117 was just a clipped fan JT-9 candidtae when I met it. Even compomised as that it stood out as the winner. Not until I met a loadmaster of an ANG C-130 at Selfridge did I find out that turbofans were not appreciated by Europeans and the C-130J was going to replace this monster. Hmmm! and a rubber tired Stryker and and A-400 all rolled out as the Crusader artillery piece and Sargeant York faded. I was left with a view of the FMc plant in San Jose with a small landscape fire as we passed. I was to see this small fire again in the landscaping of PWA-GPD in Palm Beach Gardens. This time there were pickup trucks converted to flatbeds with Joe's Honey on the door to suspect.

Full view is, indeed, impressive! It's just like being there. Thank you for this moment of warmth and sunshine and fun! Now I'm off to work, through the cold and the drizzle.

Cool stuff. I was there to that day!! What a small world. I even have a photo in my gallery of a C-47 I took there. Nice shot of the C-17. I use to work at Boeing until 98. I worked on the C-17 for about 2 years until I went back to where I started on the MD-11. You can actually see the work I did in this pic (don't know if I worked on this exact one). My crew installed the Engine Pylons (those things that hold the engines to the wing). Talk about some big bolts! Nice shot, didn't realize there were R people so close to me in So Cal.
