Description
The Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis), once common to extreme southern Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, virtually disappeared from the U.S. in the early 1930's, and none had been sighted since the early 1950's, thought to be due to changes in habitat. Small to medium sized, these birds are found in Central and South America, living in open grassland and savannah, feeding on small birds and insects. Several years ago, several dozen pairs were released into southern Texas by The Peregrine Fund. Success was shown when these pairs produced young. There are plans this year to release several Aplomado Falcons in New Mexico. This juvenile may be one of them, as you can see that he is banded. It was "quite the buzz" that this one had been sighted at this wildlife refuge and there were dozens of photographers hoping to get a sight of him. Still and yet, it is *very* rare to see one of these falcons in the U.S. and it is on the endangered list.
Dedicated to Danny, and to thank him for his helpful suggestions, and for the constant inspiration he provides with his raptor and wildlife photography. Thank you, Danny, you give the rest of us something to aspire to.
Thanks very kindly for your views and kind comments on my recent images. I appreciate it.
