Description
The beautiful Yorkshire village of HAWORTH surrounded by the Yorkshire Moors, made famous by the Bronte Sisters.
Charlotte Bronte who wrote the classic novel Jane Eyre, lived at the parsonage here in Haworth where her father was the local rector of the local church. The people in the picture are stood on the church steps.
If you ever had the pleasure of visiting Haworth it is like going back in time.
SCROGGLING of the HOLLY is a local tradition and theme day, a group of people act out and dress in traditional victorian outfits and a Horse and Cart carries three of the children who are taking part, up the steep cobbled street, followed by a parade of chldren and adults in dress, then followed by the visitors and tourists. At the top they tell a story and hold up an enormous Key which represents the key to the church. SANTA makes an appearance and he throws sweets to the children.
It was raining most of the day, taken two weeks ago. Another photo of three of these children gave me the idea for the Victorian Christmas that I painted and was my last upload.

You can tell the girl in the center of this shot is the one out of the painting Alan, a very good likeness. She stood out in this straight away, after seeing the other upload. Excellent shot, some selective colour might have been nice in this one, although the sepia is nice and gives it an authentic feel. Bravo!!!!!

I'm totally lost... the meaning of SCROGGLING??? Oh my, such an awful bunch of things come to mine. The word "hurts." :-) But I adore this very cozy shot. So very antique in nature for sure. I'd love to see something like this. It seems all over GB they have wonderful Christmas traditions. That's one of the reasons why when I sent my 12-year old daughter to England to live at my Cousin's (a head mistress for a fabulous private school), I insisted my daughter be enrolled in school there to see the difference in education (she learned to appreciate quickly the ease of American schooling!) and to taste a bit of our family history and tradition. She learned and saw and participated in so much! But, please... scroggling????

PJ. MrsLubner Lol. I can only agree. I live maybe one and a half hours away from here and whenever we tell people at home about Scroggling of the Holly, they react exactly like you have. We havn't any idea what the word means either! lol. all part of the fun !

Den Roman von Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre hab ich gelesen - in deutsch, englisch war mir zu anstrengend! Einige Bücher sollte man lesen. Viele hätten das Buch nicht gelesen, wenn sie gewußt hätten, das Currer Bell das Pseudonym für Charlotte Bonte war. Nette Idee mit diesem "historischen Foto" sich ihrer zu erinnern. I have read the novel of Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre, in German, English was too exhausting! One should read some books. Many wouldn't have read the book, if they had known - Currer Bell was the pseudonym for Charlotte Bonte. Nice idea with this "historical photo" of remembering her.
