Description

This model comes out of a conversation I was having with a friend who was a digital matte painter. We were talking about great designers and chairs. It is a right of passage for both industrial designers as well as architects to design a chair. My friend was telling me that 3D artists have a similar right of passage. Only of a chair, it's a robot. So I set about making my own robot. As it happened at about the same time, I was browsing the net, and I came across a story about Fox redoing "Lost in Space" for TV. Only thing is the pilot was so bad, and production quality was even lower, that the whole thing was being sent back for a complete rework. There were still pictures of the new robot included in the article. It looked a little cheesy. The robot looked like something from an old Dr. Who episode. Don't get me wrong. I loved that stuff. It just was not up to today's standards. So when I began work on my robot, I had "Lost in Space" in my mind. What you see here is my attempt to make a new B-9 (That's the name of the robot on the show.) It is still in the rough and needs a lot of work. I was trying to give it the feel of the original as well as the robot found in the most recent movie. Not to sure if I was able to convey this look? This robot is still a WIP because I'm not very happy with how it's turning out. So feedback please. What does the group mind think? Maybe all I need to do is clean it up and put it into a scene sitting on a chair.

I'm wondering if it might need some sort of multi purpose pack...tools,weapons or gizmos...you know eye candy:) good design:) kind of brutal and industrial:) which I like:)

Funny, am in the process of modelling my own robot totally in bryce as well. Like this design, brings to mind lots of 70s scifi. The thighs need a bit more work (imho) and maybe the forearms and hands could be a bit bigger/chunkier. Looking forward to more!

i think it has an interesting look, the head especially, which somehow looks a bit retro to me (like the mallard steam train, maybe ?)

I highly commend you for taking this on! I like the direction that you are going with this. While I like the legs, it would be cool to see a version of this with treads - similar to the movie design, but not too large. The top looks fantastic! I saw the proposed "LIS" pilot episode. It wasn't bad and had good potential to make an interesting series. Too bad it didn't get off the ground (no pun intended). I look forward to seeing more of your B9 work.
