Description

The Carrizozo Lava Fields, or Carrizozo Malpais, (malpais is Spanish for 'badlands') near Carrizozo, New Mexico, are a result of lava flows into the Tularosa Basin from the mountain in the background. They are roughly 7 to 10 miles wide, 40 to 50 yards thick, and over 40 miles long, making it one of the longest lava flows on earth. Estimated to be about 1500 years old, they are now overgrown with plants typical to the Chihuahuan desert and support a variety of wildlife. As the crow flies, it is about 30 miles from the Trinity Site, on the White Sands Missile Range, pictured in an earlier posting of mine entitled Trinity Hawk. For Errol, who shows us the wonders of his native Hawaiian volcanoes. Thank you very kindly for your views and comments on my recent images!

that is very interesting Maria and an excellent pov/capture.there is another old volcano in the northeast corner of NM. not far from where you were, I had a cousin living there.he told his wife he was going out to check his orchard and when he did not return, she went to look. she found him sitting against one of his trees dead from a heart attack.I only met him once

So many volcanoes that we see but don't really see. We have both Shasta and Lassen near by and they are part of the underground chain that stretches well past Yellowstone. It is there, bubbling and rolling below the surface of the earth but this mammoth molton mess will break free one day in a most exciting way. I love this shot for all that it teaches... life will find a way.

From the looks of things, be careful where you step. Splendid DOF, colors, clarity and textures in this capture of the ancient lava fields, Maria.

This reminds me of central Oregon. There are many places that look just like this. Thanks for the accurate description of where this field is. I was able to find it instantly on Google Earth.
