Description

And now for something completely different. Thought i might try my hand at "product" photography for a challenge over on another site. I went for the magazine ad look with the saturation postwork and general feel to the shot. I suppose this is a trip back towards my first experience with an SLR as i worked for an eBay dropoff store as a product photographer and thus earned enough money to buy my own DSLR :) Just thought i might share the outcome. And if you are interested, then here is how to get that shadow looking nice and graded: Use a softbox and bounce the light around. But - i dont have a softbox, or a bounceable flash. So what i did was attach a few sheets of white paper lengthways in a semi-tube to the flash to act as a diffuser but lengthways over the watch. The watch was on a white paper infinity curve. The camera lens was poking through a circular hole in another sheet of white paper, and on top of this i leant a sheet of tracing paper to further diffuse the light. I also held another piece of paper to the sides. But yeah - basically the watch was encased in white paper with the only bit of outside showing to one side and the lens being the only bit of black in there. Shot was fired on a timer so cut down on any wobble - i dragged the shutter slightly because i was trying to get the movement of the second hand into the shot, but couldnt control the flash output well enough (one of two settings on my old flash - hi or low ;)), so it just stayed there not at snyc speed. Long winded explanation - but you should try it, if it makes sense. Makes a huge difference to the shadows and overall "presentation" or "class" of the shot. Thanks for stopping by to take a looksie Rich

No bad at all Rich. I think you got the shadow right. I would say that the WB is off thou, the whole image looks too warm for product photography, it's all a bit too romantic for me...
