Description

Fort Nelson was built in the 1860s, as part of a chain of fortifications protecting the great naval harbour of Portsmouth in Hampshire and its Royal Dockyard from a feared French invasion. Covering nearly 19 acres and now fully restored, Fort Nelson sits majestically atop Portdsown Hill, with amazing views of the Solent and the Meon Valley. The Fort stands today as a monument to the skills and ingenuity of Victorian engineering and architecture. Opened in 1995 as home to the Royal Armouries collection of artillery, Fort Nelson has over 350 big guns and historic cannon on display, all part of the National Museum of Arms and Armour. From the Great Turkish Bombard of 1464, that once protected the Dardanelles to Saddam Husseins infamous Supergun and covering every period of history from every corner of the world. Great pov David, don't you just love that second one in, shows the maker had a sense of humor, a work of art for a killing machine. Very atmospheric with that brooding sky, looks like a storm is in the offing. Just re-read the narrative, 19 acre is a fair site to cover, I should imagine you can spend an entire day there and not get fed up. Excellent capture, postwork & presentation. Bravo!!!!!

I would love to have my Dardenelles protected by a bombard, but I have to manage with tight jeans instead. Great series of pics thanks

I especially like the composition in that picture. Was it necessary to add some noise on it ?
