Description

The man on the left is my grandfather, Maxamillian Christian Von Hesseger (note the change in the spelling of surname from yesterdays photo of his father) whom I never knew....details coming up. The woman is my grandmother, Frances Louise. I don't remember her as she passed away when I was 2 years old. The taller boy at the back was my father's older brother, Valdamar. Never knew him either as he was killed in WW2. Of course, I knew the lillle chap you see at the front - my dad aged 6. Named at that time Oscar Reginaldo. This photo according to the notes was taken in Argentina in 1921. My grandmother left Max and returned to England, changing her name back to her maiden name. She could not cope with the boys and sent them to Father Hudsons Home in Warwickshire (she was living in Henley In Arden, Warwickshire). My father at the time could have been no more than 7. When asked for a name, he gave Oscar but instead of Reginaldo, gave George instead. So became Oscar George Jelfs - but always know to everyone as George. My half brother (from my dad's first marriage) has been trying to find out more about the family for a number of years. He finally found that our grandfather had married again after my grandmother left him and has a surviving daughter living in Uraguay. It is from her that he got the photographs. Before that, none of us had ever seen pictures of our grandfather, let along great grandfather. Anyway, that's about as much as I can write now.... If you read all that..... thanks for taking the time :-)

What an amazing story! And how wonderful to have some photos! I only have 1 photo of my 4 half-sisters, so I have no idea what they look like now-- it's neat that you are piecing together the story of your family!

Wonderful photo and story. But Fray Bentos has always been Uruguay, at least after 1815.
