Description

This millstone was used in a windmill -- delivered to Governor Tryon's residence in Brunswick County (NC) in 1767 -- to grind grains and is made of coquina, which is a sedimentary rock of biochemical origin, mainly composed of mineral calcite in the form of seashells or coral. When first quarried, coquina is extremely soft, which makes it easy to cut into shape. It is left out to dry for one to three years, causing it to harden. On a lighter note: I'm still tryin' to figure out how anyone managed to get one of these around their neck... ;o) ~~~~ To my valued friends: My submissions have been sparse lately due to some changes occurring in my life right now. My desire to concentrate on these will leave little time to spend on photography. I'll still be in and out on occasion, and back in full force when my journey has progressed. Peace. Gary

Great photo - I love all the detail. Fascinating information, too. LOL at the "millstone around the neck" image! I always imagined it with a rope, not as a collar. You crack me up! :) I miss you when you're gone, my friend, so I wish you success and a speedy return. Take good care ...

I hope all goes well for you. These things do take a bit of time and putting it all back on track so it feels more normal in your life is important to a good steady creative flow. Take care and I'll be watching for you whenever you do show up. :-)
