Description

broke out the pastels this morning, and this is the result. When I first bought the pastels I did some swatches type stuff, mixing colors.. and that was it. Who knows why it took so long to actually do something with them. Pretty much the same thing with the colored pencils.. bought them during the summer and I only did one drawing with them. Some postwork in painter.. equalize, extra softening like gaussian blur, multiply and soft light for layers until I got a toned down effect. Used Strathmore sketchbook 9'' x 12'' paper. Sorry about the spots, they were on the paper before I started this, couldn't erase them.

Lovely! I really like your lighting and shading work. My attention is attracted to the eyes and nose, then that gorgeous hair. Thanks for the information on your process. Wonderful art work. Hugs, Suzanne

I've commented, so far, on your charcoals; it's a surprise to suddenly walk into pastels. I know, of course, that I've only seen a few of your works, so my 'newness' doesn't reflect your experience...You've used certain colors to portray the subtlest states of emotion, mystery, 'present-ness', etc. I especially like how you use yellows in the face & neck, and paler reds as well. You've used colors subtly but expressively on all portions of her flesh. Some find pastels tempting enough to use colors over-dramatically; you've used them subtly in your piece. The hair is done with a nice sweep behind her (a nice choice to my eye), and the gown is simple enough to be no more than a gown, drawing our attention to her face & neck. Yet it's nice to see the simple means by which you communicate 'gown' and its folds, etc. As for the background, it appears that you've given it just enough attention to let it complement your figure, but not too much to detract. It's nicely articulated with broad lines, and the blends are quiet & restful. The patch of blue is nice, as is the general whites & grays at bottom. I found pastels mystifying even though I'd worked in pencils for years (and painted in inks). They're a blast, as Mina suggests, but they take more discipline than meets the eye, if one is tempted to just jump in and grind & blend. As with charcoal, you've shown an ease that comes from drawing the human figure many, many times. It's a delicate piece. And really, the spots on the paper are fine. It's a natural medium: The more blemishes, the merrier. I like this piece a lot.
