Seems more like a flash explosion on deck, than a sunrise through the masts. I think what seems to throw it off is the over-exposed lighting on the lower sail, and the lighting showing the side of the ship facing the viewer. With the sun coming through the rigging, the side of the ship would still be in siloutte, very difficult to see details. You would not really see the gunports or painted strake. The sails would be more opaque, less see-through, with the shadows of the masts and sails behind each successive mast showing on the backside of its' predecessor. I think if you tried more of a photoshop lens flare, it would be a little more realistic. Everything else looks pretty good.

When I'm being technical, I try to be faultless, when I'm being an artist I sometimes use something called 'artist license' to help stir the imagination... you may have heard of it? if it hurts the eye, image there's a big white iceberg just off the port bow behind the camera. By the way... I disagree with the explosion theory. That's not a technical assessment. that's just a personal viewpoint, which of course you are entitled to... be happy with it... it yours to keep! I did this picture and others, trying to capture the flavour of the traditional marine artists of the past. So on a technical note, if I had used lens flare, it would imply that there was a camera present, which would have been wrong for the impression I wished to give.
