Description

I had a technical criticism of my last entry 'Dawn'. It can be see with the comments for that picture, along with my reply. I wasn't doing a technical illustration of a ship, or a sunrise... I was illustrating an emotion on that one. Today's entry has another deliberate technical mistake: The fourth funnel on the Titanic was false and used partly as a vent for the galley. Since the designers of the ship had seen fit to balance the overall symmetry of their design with this false funnel, I have seen fit to portray it with smoke coming out, for the same symmetry and a bit of artist license. What do I know, Huh? ... and having said that, what did the designers know... it sank immediately.l Bryce and Photoshop. I think I bought this model here. dmrc_enabled_wbtn.gif

Kudos to you on your response. Your nautical artwork is outstanding as are the moods and emotions depicted in each and every one of them. And, you are most correct in your research of the 4th funnel on the Titanic. Your overall design, layout and composition of this render is again, in my opinion, outstanding artwork.

Certainly a great pov and render, but I have a couple of points for you to consider. The sea was at that time reportedly 'flat-calm', almost a mill pond and the ship would not have been flying what appears to be an American flag as you have here. She would have flown the White Star house flag and/or the flag of the British Merchant Navy; the Stars & Stripes being hoisted only as a courtesy in US waters or while in an American port.

I think that's pretty 'mill pond' for the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The disturbance mainly is from the ship... I thought I had at least done the sea correctly and getting an icy feel to it. As for the flag, this picture was originally done for the Monthly Render on the DAZ site during the Thanksgiving period. Hence I felt I was in American waters myself and left it on as a little courtesy!. I also did them a Mayflower (with an English flag on it, however) on thanksgiving day, itself. Artist license moves in mysterious ways. All the sea pictures I did recently are an attempt to recreate a little bit of the magic of the traditional marine pictures of the past, most of which can hardly be described as accurate – again, it's more about emotion and feeling, rather than technical perfection... Hey, I'm not always happy with my work by any means, I am my own biggest critic and put myself through hell to do what I do and even then, my ambition now it to take my work to another level, but having said that people like these pictures! Regards.

I agree, the artist should go with what pleases their eye not what is technically correct! That said, I love this image. Excellent mood and movement!

Very nicely done! The effect of the ship churning up the water is spot on and your lighting is excellent. I already knew about the smokestack but I don't know which one was false, I'm guessing the front one, any idea?

Great Image. I have been working on a Titanic model for some time, so you have inspired me. :) Maybe they burnt dinner in the kitchen which would explain smoke from the 4th stack. Rich

I understand that the builders didn't use the best materials for the hull. The result was a tendency of the metal to crack. Excellent render and effects.
