Description

Full size view is recommended. It kind of "pops". :-) Humans riding dragons is a very recurrent theme. But I think I never saw a human riding a dragon as a surf board, using a valley's ascending hot air currents. That would be kind of fun, wouldn't it? :-) I made for the girl light and colorful clothes to fit this moment of pure and simple joy. I chose basic colors for the whole scene (red, green and blue) to ilustrate the simplicity of her life. As usual in my landscapes, there's only one light source, which is the sun (lighting consistency in landscapes is one of the things I always strive for). I chose the angle of the sun as near noon for two reasons: first, to take the most advantage from the richness of the shadowplay in the cliff wall depressions, and second to give this scene a bright, sunny, happy mood. The valley was done, as usual, in Geocontrol2, textured in Vue. The vegetation is an ecosystem with a mixture of several things (there are nearly 1 million trees and bushes in this scene). For a notion of scale, I added some haze and three dragons in the distance (two near the water, you can even see their shadows and reflections, and one in front). In Vue, these dragons have exactly the same scale as the main dragon, so you can see this is a huge set. I might use it again in future scenes. This is my second image in a series about dragons. The first was "Shepherd of Dragons", link below. thumb_1601752.jpg I would like to thank all of you who were kind enough to comment and fave this image. I must admit I never expected such strong reaction, it was very much appreciated. Thanks for watching!

i love this scene, and i look forward to seeing it again. you were really successful at communicating the majesty and scale of the landscape. the act looks like wonderfully dangerous fun, and the materials on the dragon's skin are very realistic and nicely uneven. to my eye, somehow the surfer and dragon lack the impact your primary subjects usually have. it might be the color of the dragon, which is fairly muted and dark given the background of dark trees. or it might be the scale and camera angle, which seems to favor presenting the scene in the most dramatic fashion. also, the color of the surfer's outfit seems very bright and artificial in a scene with so many natural colors and textures. overall, i think this is an absolutely excellent image with an inventive and fun concept, brilliant lighting, and a wonderful landscape.

What a joyful scene! I particularly like the dragon - its glorious! Both the girl and the dragon are posed very dynamically, and when combined with the dramatic scenery, its exhilarating. Comparing the dragons/human interactions of the two images is very interesting too: in the first the leadership of the human was by authority and there is a clear boundary between them, here the girl leads by inclusion of the dragons in her life. Perhaps analogies could be drawn with dictatorships and democracies? What a fun creation.

Very cool looking! A superb picture, but the color-scheme seems a bit off to my eye, though. The wyvern's red color looks a bit plastic on my monitor. Maybe if it were a bit browner, it look more real. I might need a new monitor. LOL Great idea and execution of that idea!

Overall, a very nice scene. I think the water needs a bit of work...at that angle it would be more transparent or you would see more highlights depending on the angle of the sun. The same is true for the transparency in the dragon wings. I think I would make them not transparent as they don't look correct. The lighting is excellent, and the diagonal point of view, superb. The addition of the faraway dragons is brilliant as they lend great sense of scale to the scene. The trees and terrain are spot on. I, personally, like the splash of color on the character, plus you did a great job in hiding her face as well-- always a good idea when rendering people ;-) Not as good, IMO, as your last masterpiece, I still give this one plenty of high 5's!!!
