Description

Rendered in Bryce. The image is raw with no post-work. Whilst landscapes are one of my favourite subjects in traditional mediums, I have hesitated to attempt them in Bryce. I have been frustrated particularly by the unrealistic appearance of flora. Even when browsing professional sites such as x-frog, I have wondered whether the designing artists have actually looked at a real tree in detail, rather than through an office window. The intention of this piece was to create trees that look like a specific species, in this case Fagus Purpurea, the copper beech. I would greatly appreciate criticism on this piece. Whilst I respect the sentiment of those who have previously commented on my work, I would prefer to avoid singular statements like "cool" or "great work". I am interested in hearing from those who can analyse the painting and perhaps make suggestions as to its improvement. Many thanks for taking the time to look. Huw Carr, Jan 29th 2008. P.S. This painting is dedicated to my wife Gill on this her birthday. P.P.S Many thanks to Svenart for providing the free cottage and the related textures.

This is very nice. I like the atmosphere and the scudding clouds. By the way, in answer to your question: I do my splash and fire effects in Photoshop.

That has been one of my biggest complaints in Bryce is that the trees look cartoonish, and populating a forest id a daunting task. One wrong "tweak" and your tree is a pot-belly stove. These trees are very well formed with acceptable foliage. Excellent Bryceing!

Actually this is very good for Bryce. I prefer Vue to Bryce but own both. Only addition might be a touch of Depth of Field blur on the foremost leaves. Otherwise a very good country style image. Idylic.

It is a wonderful setting and has evidence of civilization. I wonder it the leaves are just a bit too sun seeking leading to flat branches. I have seen beech leaves curled all the way up on the edges in this behavior so I am more wondering than criticising. Beeches are native to several continents and in the U.S. some of the fanciest are from Belgium though native species occur. I reseached an especially large one in New York when Rudy Giuliani fell on hard times with his mistress and wife. The only site with a picture showed it in winter leaflessness so I will let you see the official link with the most recent. http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_newsroom/press_releases/press_releases.php?id=19984

I like your composition on this image. You have foreground interest with the branches of the trees on the right, the light on the leaves works much better than the often seen foreground silhouette. The shadows falling on the cottage really add depth as does the haze in the distance. Your trees look realistic and, importantly, different from each other. Altogether a very nice peaceful scene.

Hey Huw, I have to say that I thought this was a Vue image rather than Bryce, which is credit to your skills with the details of the trees, the groundcover density, sky and lighting. I think that overall this is an extremely good rendition of a landscape, and I am very impressed by your tree models - used an outside modeling app, or just really persevered with the editor in Bryce? The dappled light, and shadow ambiance are both convincing too. I think that maybe the composition/viewpoint could be reconsidered to make the most of the scene details, which I think is one of the great advantages of Bryce's director camera. Might be worth creating some really high detail branches and leaves for absolute foreground framing, as it helps enclose he scene, and further advance the illusion of reality. The leaves on the branch to the near right do seem a bit flat, maybe they would benefit from a little randomisation!? - Adam

The tree modeling is excellent. The foreground limbs leads to a good perspective of the shack that is in the distance. The shadowing on the ground, and in particular on the shack is well done. I only have two suggestions. When you do your post work, bring out the color cast and saturation just a little bit. It seems like Bryce has a bad tendency to dull things out. The only other thing is that the 'arc' in the clouds above the shack looks a little artificial. Maybe try and break that arc up with some small puffy edges. This is a very nice scene, and I look forward to seeing the final version.

I would like to thank the people who have taken the time to view this image. Through the wonderfully informative criticism I have received on this piece I have learnt more from this image than any other I have posted before. I invited a half dozen of my personally favourite artists to view this piece in order to criticise it. Some replied to me via IM, giving extremely detailed information. Although this piece took an awfully long time to bring to this state (due mainly to the ten or so test renders I performed) it was worth it for the experience it gave me. I hope that in future you will see an improvement in my work. Thank you very much for making this a great learning experience. Kind regards, Huw Carr.

As I final little comment to help you with the clouds, once you are happy with the overall lay out of a scene, on your final render pump up the quality button on the clouds in the materials lab. It might double your render time but could be worth the extra hours if you get it right. I must confess that I personally cheat and use photos, but that is due to needing a great result for the project I am working on. Apparently DAZ have recoded Bryce, which means they can do so much more with the technology over the coming seasons. Great work by the way.

Working with trees, especially many of them, can be a frustrating experience in Bryce, though I think your perrseverance has paid off here! Its a very realistic looking scene! Now, as Kromekat said, the leaves on the rightmost tree appear a little flat - not sure how that can be fixed though. Overall, a little more variation in the colour of the leaves in any one tree would add to the realism. There is already a good spread of colour between the trees though. All up though, the trees are very effective, as is the grass - well done! As an entire scene its well composed and I particularly like the overall sense of 'softness' in the render. This soft lighting reminds me very much of Vue, a program well worth considering if you'd like to pursue your interest in landscapes. Judging from this image, that would be worth pursuing as you have a talent for them!

The most important points I like very much in your picture, is the depth and plasticity that you've created with the light/shadows and the point of view. And I have to agree with TheBear005's suggestion. I think you can expose both points I mentions before, with some postwork like increasing the saturation a bit and adding more contrast to the foreground. You could also try to add a bit blur to the bough in the foreground. Another point I have to agree with TheBear005 is the background, the clouds look somehow squeezed and the hills clean bow is really odd, though the hill looks really fine where it meets the tree line. From my point of view, the trees look very fine. The only case I noticed at the upper and lower bough in the front, is that the leaves seem a bit too arranged (the branches between look very good). I hope I could help a bit. btw. The finetuning of a complex scene is always very stressful, sometimes really frustrating. But belive me, the effort will pay of. I know this from my own experience...
