Description

Please forgive me for posting something with a holiday theme this late in the year! This is about the light and the reflections more than it is about the tree. When I took this shot (along with several more that were much like it!) I had no idea what I'd gotten. Every angle I shot this from produced a slightly different result. This grand piano is actually black laquer. The flat, white, winter light we have here, at the precise angle from which I shot this, gave the piano a chrome/hematite look that I just couldn't believe when I saw it! While I admit to some postwork (I took out a bright red santa hat that was sitting on the piano) I didn't do anything to make the black surface look silver. It really is just the angle of the light. This is another photograph taken at my brother's house. If you want to see how distorted the reflections are, you can check out a photo I took of the brass lamp for comparison. And yes, this is the same piano I was crawling around under! If you missed that charming image, you can see it here. By the way - the surface of the piano is perfectly smooth. That weirdness in the middle of the tree isn't a flaw in the laquer, it's just another version of one of the reflections. Full view might be fun! :)

This is completely wonderful! I love the light and the amazing clarity of the reflections, even to the door handles, perhaps a deck railing outside, and the beautiful sensuous curve on the lid of this marvelous instrument! A fantastic shot, Tara! Brava!

A brilliant decision to employ this splendid POV to display the bright reflections of the Xmas tree, lamp, etc. With all that bright glitter and texture on the piano, Liberace would have loved this shot.

Very well seen and very well brought to life. I love a fine wood finish for just this reason. The affect here is really unreal so it has a very special quality knowing it is exactly that...real.

Wow, how tricky is this shot. Full of "hiden" reflections. Need a cool thinking to see this and deliver it with great POV.

How can I get in touch with your brother Tara, I wish to book an holiday at his house. The lighting is fantastic, you always get great results from there this being no exception. The shine on that grand joanna is pure magic and the reflections are out of this world, rather than being stumped for words there are too many jumbled in my head I can't get them all out. I think there are about ten different reflections just of the tree and lights. As you said taking it large is well worth the click of the mouse. I wish I could get my stones to look this glossy. I think you have surpassed yourself with this image Tara, and I have run out of superlatives. Excellent, fantastic, awesome. Can you tell I love(lurv) it, instant fav. Bravo!!!!!5+++++
