Description

This McDonnell RF-101 'Voodoo' is landing at Udorn RTAB, Thailand. The RF denotes photo reconnaissance. The aircraft had two J-57 engines each with 16,000 pounds of thrust in afterburner. Top speed was Mach 1.85. It carried three cameras and was used for daytime recon missions. As soon as the aircraft came to a stop the photoshop stepvan removed the cameras and rushed the film for development. Whenever there was a strike on a target in North Vietnam, photo recon planes were sent in afterward to photograph the results of the strike. The enemy knew that and they were waiting. These photo recon aircraft carried only cameras and were unarmed. They knew they were expected, yet they still had to fly the missions. After their return from the mission, the film was removed and developed and it was analyzed by the experts for BDA (bomb damage assessment). Based on this analysis, follow up strikes were carried out if deemed necessary, or other targets were selected. After an initial discovery of Soviet missiles in Cuba by a U-2 overflight in 1962, RF-101 'Voodoos' were flying follow up missions over Cuba out of Homestead AFB, Florida to varify compliance of the demand by President Kennedy for the Soviets to withdraw the missiles during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. This picture was taken in April 1967 and was later scanned. Thanks for viewing and commenting on my previous upload.

Exciting fast image, and your information brings back alot of memories of very serious situations back then.I must have only been 5yr but distinctly remember my father talking about the Cuba missile crisis while we all sat at the dining table. 1967, I was only 10years old and shocking T.V. Images of the Vietnam War ever present back when I was a child. "I go on a bit" sometimes, but this brings it all back.

I couldn't resist a Voodoo, though by your hat I may seem cryptic to you. My first jet model was a Voodoo. I based it on a conversation I had with James S. McDonnell in the elevator of building 18A on a rainy morning in Long Beach. A lot of people worked every day with him just like some people wokred with the Voodoo everyday. What is that glint in this photo here? Somebody get a magnifying glass.

Canada used the FB-101 up until the F-18 arrived. I grew up maybe an hour's drive from CFB Chatham - one of the east coast homes for the Voodoo. The sight & sound of planes like these are what got me hooked on aviation.
