Description

The Buckingham Palace Guards are serving soldiers. Guarding the Sovereign is only one of several duties. The tradition of guarding the Sovereign by the household troops (as they were known at the time) dates back to the time of Henry VII (1485-1509). The hats they wear are know as Bearskins and weigh 665 grams. I was standing at the fence of Buckingham Palace watching these two parading up and down and I was trying to figure out who gave the command for the about face when they reached either the fence or the Palace Guard House. It was spring time and by European standards fairly warm. These hats must have been pretty uncomfortable to wear. This picture was taken in May 1978 and later scanned. Thanks for viewing and commenting on my previous upload.

Very interesting, Sig. You do a very good job of scanning these old photos. I've always wondered why the chin straps on these hats don't go all the way down under the chin so they would actually hold the hat on.

Those straps over their faces must be extrmely uncomfortable. The guy of the left looks like his strap is slipping. LOL. Lovely shot!

Great capture Sig. There was some old TV footage they would show here one year when the Summer was unusually hot. The guards were all lined up standing perfectly to attention, then one fainted crashing to the ground but as he fell head first his whole body was still rigid.
