Description

The crew of Megalopolis IV, the cryogenic colony starship, don't expect to encounter space-pirates, since space-piracy was still only a theoretical possibility, when the voyage started. While Megalopolis IV has slept, though, the rest of the human diaspora has had hundreds of years in which to make scientific breakthroughs, of which the colonists can have no inkling. What was uncharted space at the outset may already have been colonised by people with more advanced stardrives. It's an uncomfortable thought that, if the crew were ever called upon to repel boarders, they would be doing so with weapons centuries out of date. Still, there's no harm in practising and there's nothing like a war-game to relieve the tedium of life in a giant freezer. With the game safely won by the defending team, most of the crew-members will be returned to stasis, leaving only the current officers of the watch to resume their lonely vigil.
