Description

The collegiate Church of St. Peter Westminster, which is almost always referred to by its original name of Westminster Abbey, is a large, mainly Gothic church which served as chathedral fom 1546-1566. It is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English monarchs. The stone Abbey was built around 1045-1050 by King Edward the Confessor. The Abbeys two western towers were built between 1722 and 1745 by Nicolas Hawksmoor and were constructed from Portland stone. Until the 19th century Westminster was the third center of learning in England, after Oxford and Cambridge. The Abbey is located just west of the Palace of Westminster, London (Wikipedia). The Abbeys exterior has been restored and was covered with scaffolding for several years. This picture was taken in May 1998 and later scanned. Another great shot, I like the angle and capturing the lamp in the foreground. I live in the NorthWest of England. Sylvia's son David lives down in Watford, we visit once a year and always go see the sights of London. Just as fascinating for us as it is for overseas tourists.
