Description

This I am fairly sure is the Papuan Hornbill, Aceros plicatus also known as Blyth's Hornbill, or Kokom.. There is considerable differences of opinion in the research books if this is an individual or a sub species, whatever it is in my book a very beautiful bird.. This is an adult male with head and neck rufous; body and wings black; tail white; bill, with casque a series of low wreaths across base, pale yellow, with dark red-brown base and casque; bare circumorbital skin pale blue with flesh colored eyelids forming ring around eye; bare throat skin white with blue tinge; eyes red to red-brown; legs and feet black. Hornbills have a facinating way to protect the female and eggs from predation, and shore up the holes in a tree so that the female can be fed through a small hole.. Thanks as always for taking time to view and also any comments etc you care to make Best to view full size

Fantastic macro Danny, that baleful eye is spot on, and I would not like a 'peck' from that horned bill. Excellent capture and presentation. Bravo!!!!!

Those red eyes are quite piercing and I've never noticed before that birds have eyelashes - unless it's just the brilliant detail in your shot?! Great capture Danny!
