Description

Considered by Benjamin Franklin to be a bird of courage and respect, the turkey was once in the running to become the national bird of the United States of America. Rather than my often posted Bald Eagle.. The bird that so captured Franklin's heart has become a different kind of national icon for the U.S I must admit to being rather taken aback by the quite stunning colours and display of this Tom or Male Turkey.. The name was a mistaken ID of what was thought to be another type of bird a Guinea fowl, and not from Turkey as was first thought.. Brought into Europe by the Spanish in the 1500's the more one reads about this intelligent social bird the more I think Franklin may have been onto something! Thanks for taking time to look and for any comments

Superb color and clarity of this turkey's head and wattle! A very fine image, Danny...but if the turkey had been declared the national bird, it would have probably been protected, as the eagle, and Thanksgiving Day Dinner just wouldn't be quite as delectable!

Excellent detail, clarity and color. Beautiful capture, even if the bird is not! :) The wild turkey population in Texas is at a all time high, and huge flocks can be seen all over south and south central Texas. We once counted over a hundred, crossing a interior dirt road in Sonora, Texas, single file...lol :) It was a really nice site. Todd

Excellent clarity, color, and detail on this guy. It's a good thing they taste good, because they're certainly not going to win any beauty contests LOL.

I've always thought Franklin had a good idea but it is bothersome to think that one would sit down to Thanksgiving dinner and dine on the National Bird of the US. LOL This is a wonderful shot. The details in the fatty warting is great. He's a magnificent bird and fit as a fiddle from the looks of him.

Excellent! If these birds had a sense of smell they would be impossible to get close to. Their hearing is amazing and their eye sight is a surround view. They are creatures of habit though. A very fun bird to call in the wild for photos in April and May.

What a fantastic capture. If you ever get a chance, touch a tame one to see how soft that head is. It's an amazing experience. He's a beauty! Bunny

Turkeys can be trained just like a dog, they'll follow you all around the yard, they're very smart, contrary to popular opinions! Excellent image Danny!!!!!

Wonderful image. In a way, the turkey is a national bird, but not the kind this bird wants to be. lol ... Excellent discovery on the history of this marvelous bird, and a closeup of the beauty of his feathers.
