Born in Hilo, Hawaii and class of '66, I became very active in Barbells, Judo and love striking the heavy/speed bag. I've learned to Rollerblade and bike ride which is a very health sport. But time doesn't stop for anyone including for me. So my good friend Dave aka punaguy got me started in taking pictures. I'm having fun taking pictures especially hiking the mountains. I'm enjoying seeing the world thru your post on Renderosity. Mahalo and Aloha....Errol

The grand photo after the lava trees helps put this into perspective of the massiveness of this crater. It is so hard to grasp the size unless you are there. However, through your great stories from earlier pictures you took, one gets the awe of this giant hole that was once Pele's fury. Well done!

Eww - Rotten eggs! Nice capture Errol - is it possible to walk across the crater or would that just be silly?

What an awesome view! I'm surprised to hear about the odor. Is that always there, even on craters that have been dormant that long, i.e. trees growing, or is this new activity meaning that there danger of a new eruption?
sharky_
beachzz.....The crater is approx 35 m (114.829 ft ) deep today. When surveyed in 1886, the crater was nearly 4 times deeper (120 m) (393.700 ft) . An eruptive fissure opened at the base of the southwest wall of Kaenakako`i on July 19, 1974. rockstrider....It is possible to walk on the floors of this crater. CavalierLady.....The sulfur odor is always present in the area but an increase in sulfur dioxide is probably due to an active eruption several miles away. Thanks for asking... Aloha

Wonderful shot, Errol. The trees on the crater walls give a good indication of the size, but thanks for the numbers for verification. Too bad I missed this last year. Guess I'll just have to come back. :-)
