Description
This memorial is from Calvary Cemetery, located off Elvis Presley Boulevard in South Memphis, Tennessee.
Calvary was established in the mid 1800's to serve the booming populations of the immigrant Catholic Irish, Germans, and Italians. More than fifty thousand of the departed faithful are buried at Calvary representing Catholic families that have lived in Memphis for over 150 years.
Years ago, cemeteries were considered by many as part of the community of the living, as well as the dead. In Memphis, Calvary was the last stop on the trolley line in the 1890s. On Sundays, Catholics often came out and tended to their loved one's graves and had picnics. A somewhat bizarre type of "family reunion".
Calvary is indeed a wonderful place (if you like those sorts of wonderful places), and we intend on a return trip real soon. But not even Calvary can compare to the grace, elegance, and old world charm of Elmwood Cemetery, also in Memphis and not to far away from Calvary.
But both places have their own unique allure. I can see how back in the old days both these cemeteries were an attractive gathering place for families on a Sunday afternoon. Perhaps if the surrounding neighborhoods today weren't such a dangerous battle zone, the practice might still continue.

My kind of place! So many interesting things to see and think about. The dead don't bother me at all.
