Description

View from Faanui Bay at the location of the old US WWII subway slip toward Mt. Otemanu (727m), Bora Bora. In January 1942 the United States was still shaken by the surprise attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 8 December 1941 that left much of the US Pacific Fleet destroyed. They decided on the establishment of a perimeter that could be defended until a counter-offensive against Japan could be mounted. This perimeter started in Bora Bora some 3200km distance from Hawaii, west through Samoa and on to New Zealand. As part of the perimeter, 4,500 US personnel from different branches were stationed here during WWII. This also included 105mm defensive guns, one seaplane squadron of eight single-engine OS2U, and a subway slip and fuel depot in Faanui Bay. Some of the pilings of the old subway slip are still visible today (Lonely Planet, Tahiti & French Polynesia, 1992). This picture was taken in April 2001 and later scanned. Though Bora Bora is French , I simply was unaware of what you wrote in your very interesting historical narrative, Sig. Thank you for making me less stupid this evening LOL! You were lucky to see the 'Polynésie française'!
