Description
This was taken last weekend on the back side of a tombstone from the early 1800's at Hillcrest Cemetery in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Although a beautiful, detailed carving, there was no reference to it on either side of the tombstone.
Our first guess was they were Greek Mythology's The Three Fates, although there are certain elements that don't necessarily match up to the famous white robed sisters. The ladies packed a lot of influence on people's lives, and one or two of them were even feared by the Gods themselves (possibly their parents)!
But the story on the girls, also known as the Moirae, varies so greatly it's difficult to make a positive identification based only on this image. They are often portrayed as old, rather unattractive women, obviously not the case here.
And there are some symbolic elements here that originate from a variety of sources. What looks like a big fishhook could be an anchor, an ancient symbol of hope. Early Christians even used the anchor as a disguised cross to mark their secret meeting places. Or maybe they planned to do some big-time fishing!
The dove, of course, is a symbol of peace and/or the Holy Spirit and the wreath can be a symbol of eternity or of victory; basically victory over death or eternal life.
Another possibility is they are what's known as "The Three Mary's", the three followers of Jesus who witnessed his death and eventual resurrection. That would be Mary (Mother of Jesus), Mary Magdalene and Salome.
But whoever they are, I thought the image was beautiful and worthy of bringing home. I think it will make an excellent print. Any additional input as to their identity would be greatly appreciated!
This is my second post from Hillcrest Cemetery. The first one, entitled "Let's Rest for a While" can be viewed by clicking here.
Thanks for stopping by!

I think they may be Faith Hope and Charity (or Love).Hope definitely often has an anchor as her attribute as you say; the dove however can surprisingly be an attribute not of Charity but Chastity! The characteristic gesture of Faith is to hold her hand to her breast, maybe the dove is the Holy Spirit which she holds close. (It's all a bit guesswork, especially as the lady on the right could be on her mobile phone!)I'll do some more research, I'm quite interested in symbolism in art.

I would love to have a print of this image. It is awesome. I, too, have walked various graveyards and taking in the tributes from the living to those who have passed on. The old ones are so varied and interesting. Always something to ponder...
