Description
Looking down the upstairs hallway at Ernestine & Hazel's, a legendary musical landmark (among other noteworthy items) here in Memphis, Tennessee. The building goes back to the 1800's, and over the decades it has sported a variety of activities including a combo dry goods store/brothel. Perhaps that made it the original "convenience store"!
The musical legacy of Ernestine & Hazel's fits in nicely with the brothel business. When R & B musicians came into Memphis to record, they would often stay at E & H writing music, playing around the old piano (that's still there), and of course partying all night with "the girls". And if you should happen to need any dry goods, you were also in luck!
Leah and I were there one night this week for a psychic walk through by renowned psychic Tina Michelle. While everyone else was downstairs we were on the second floor with our cameras. I shot the hallway from one end, and she shot the same hallway from the opposite end, so looking at them together gives you the full view with both perspectives.
So be sure to catch Leah's photograph, "Walking the Hall, Part One". Just click here.
The old decayed interior paired with the colored lights makes for an interesting combination.
My first post from our visit there this week, "Closing Time" is right here, and leads to some other pictures and stories of Ernestine & Hazel's.
Thanks for viewing!
