Description
These are Bald Cypress trees growing in a lake in Northern Mississippi. These trees, relatives of the ancient redwoods and sequoias of California, are common in southern swamps along the Gulf Coast and the Lower Mississippi, but can grow as far north as Indiana.
They love the water, and often grow as seen here, in the shallow water right up to the lake's edge. Their buttressed bases help them stand tall in the muddy soil.
Although they are needle-leaved trees such as pine or fur trees, they are not evergreens. Their soft, feathery needles turn brown and drop off in the fall.
These photos were taken about a week ago, so they are still bare due to winter. However, the new leaf buds are already present, and viewed from a distance they can often give a pinkish hue to the otherwise drab wintry looking trees.

Beautiful, and as I live in California with the redwoods almost in my backyard, it was most interesting to learn these trees are related!! Not even 6 degrees of separation here!!
