Description

Missy died two weeks ago The cancer she had carried For seven years had grown To a size as big as my fist One night it burst open And being nineteen years old A gentle sleep was all I could offer her Now I can’t manage The long walks to the beach With my Irish Wolfhounds anymore Linda takes care of these strolls I had to find myself a new friend To accompany me on my slow walks So I adopted an eleven year old mixed breed Who listens (or rather not listens, he’s deaf) To the name Toornie, that’s Flemish slang Which means “It doesn’t hear”, quite fitting Getting him home I promised myself three things That Toornie would get a peaceful Carefree time during his last years That I would try to guide him, like Missy To the mature age of nineteen And that I would survive him Now I know that I can guarantee The first of these three commitments As for the other two We’re going to give it A damned good try ------------------------------------------- Thank you so much for reading and any comments you might have Have a GREAT week Dirk

Sweet baby (no matter his age) Toornie is- I can tell, and I bet he already adores you. It's amazing how a new love has the potential to help mend a broken heart..and, since eye contact will be paramount to communication in Toornie's case, I think this new friendship will blossom quickly. Slow walks with your new friend will be wonderful. I have no doubt about the first promise being fulfilled..and great hope with all my heart that numbers two and three will be realized, as well. Hang in, Dirk!

A man of his word. Toornie is in good hands and I suspect you will be in good paws. Excellent story. He's a cutie. Bunny

my dog is 17 and I am fighting the notion of having the vet put him to sleep. he can not hear anything and he keeps falling down. he without doubt is the best dog I have had, never doing anything wrong. minding and the most gentle animal.he wants so bad to go walking but he can not make 3 blocks, or he is walking in slow motion. I know how you feel and it is not easy to accept

I see no reason that you will not keep all three of those promises, those four-legged friends have a way of keeping a person going. By WOOFEE

This is a fantastic and touching piece of writing. Animals are such perfect, unconditionally accepting companions, and there's an extreme note of gentleness here. I like commitments as well: making them is always so incredibly easy, and for as long as you can make them, they imply in some small way, that life goes on. They're like prayers in that sense, and one of the things about the universe in general, is that it somehow finds ways to keep us in the game of making commitments. Having said that, I'd love to know--at some distant date in the future--that you've kept all three commitments, then--like a typical human--went out and made a dozen more!

Keep on Dirk. He looks to be a fuzzy bundle of love. I have a 13yr old Black Lab(Albert), he came with our house when we bought it. He still runs the neighboring fields and protects us from the "monsters" even though sometimes it is hard for him to get up. We could have never picked another creature so loving and are blessed with him in our lives, it will be hard to let him go.

I hope to still be reading new work from you when Toornie is 19. I'm happy for you, for your new friend.

Toornie will be listening to your eyes, Dirk. I have no doubt that he'll see more love in them than has ever reached his ears. I'm glad you have one another... and a "damned good try" is all anyone can ask... or receive. My love to all of you... :)

My apologies for your loss, Dirk! It never gets any easier, it's always heartbreaking as each pet has its own unique personality. I envision for you that you will be able one day soon to walk with Linda with both Toornie and your beloved wolfhounds again!

There is nothing that warms my heart more then hearing of folks who adopt the old dogs. Everyone wants a puppy, and the old ones languish, hearbroken, not understanding what has happened. God Bless you Dirk, for bringing this beautiful one to a home filled with love for his last years. And in the next breath, my heart aches for you, losing a faithful and loving Companion. That's the hard part, their lives are so short, and each one that dies leaves an empty, aching hole. I'm always amazed that even with all these holes in my heart, I can find so much room to love yet one more! I know you will fulfill all three promised to yourself.
