Description

Rhyolite, the "Queen City", was the largest town in the Death Valley area with a population of 5,000-10,000 people. During its heyday, from 1905-1911, it contained 2 churches, 50 saloons, 18 stores, 2 undertakers, 19 lodging houses, 8 doctors, 2 dentists, a stock exchange and an opera. The town contains numerous ruins including the Bottle House, Senator W.A. Clark's train depot, remains of a 3-story bank building, and the jail. It is on BLM land and is accessible by passenger car. Rhyolite is located 4 miles west of Beatty and 35 miles from the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. We did'nt have a digital camera, so we've to save our films. We've seen the Last Supper by Albert Szukalski, but there so many better photographs, I desided to show you this shot of a vey ancient wagon, maybe used for trees to move, or a big gun? We did enjoyed the place very much, a stunning area to be. take care, enjoy thoday, tomorrow he's gone.

I have read your narative and I am glad you managed to squeeze this image in, very interesting, and a great find. Why this is left here to rot I do not know, this should be displayed in a museum somewhere. Just imagine the work that went into making this wonderful piece of history. I assume from your narrative that this is a ghost town? The history of this place sounds facinating, it is a shame to just let things die a death like this. Excellent capture, a very thought provoking image. Bravo!!!!!

Very fascinating place. I was there a couple years ago when all the flowers were blooming. It was awesome! I didn't get to see a lot of stuff, but did manage to see the bottle house and it was fascinating. Thanks for posting these pics.

I have seen pictures of the bottle house. A wonderful picture here, and love that you posted "the last supper" just underneath.
