Description
An unknown Confederate soldier from the Great War Between the States, otherwise known as the American Civil War. This was taken at Hillcrest Cemetery in Holly Springs, Mississippi. The unknown soldier's tombstone is one among many at Hillcrest. Chances are he was a victim from the Battle of Shiloh, which took place 80 miles away on April 6th & 7th, 1862.
Shiloh was one of the absolute bloodiest and vicious battles of the Civil War. Many of the Confederate wounded were evacuated to Holly Springs where days later they would ultimately succumb to their injuries inflicted from the battle. I speculate that he was one of the wounded because the dead from Shiloh were not even evacuated, but left behind on the killing fields of the battle, ending up in mass graves.
It was a rough time in Holly Springs back in April of 1862. General Grant, the victor of Shiloh, eventually took over the city and established residence there. But that's another story.
Hillcrest has 13 or 14 Confederate Generals buried there, as well as the nation's first African-American senator, Hiram Revels, along with too many other Southern dignitaries to mention here.
