Description

The next falls downstream from Weisendanger Falls is Dutchman Falls, acutally a series of three short drops. This is the middle tier, a drop of 15 feet, just under 5 meters. The Pacific Northwest Waterfalls page has this to say about it: "Between Multnomah Falls and Weisendanger Falls, Multnomah Creek makes several small dashes down a series of wide basalt ledges. Three of these are spaced close enough together that grouping them into one entry is feasible. The first drop is a 10 foot tall, 20 foot wide block shaped waterfall that can only be seen from the side. The second and largest is a 15 foot tall, 20 foot wide non-vertical block – the most easily seen of the three. The last is an 8 foot slide which is partially blocked from view by some bushes." The sad part is that that log wasn't there last year, and will probably be there for as long as I hike this trail. Several people have mentioned in their comments on past uploads cleaning up the trees that have fallen this last winter. I have to say, based on past experience, that the logs that don't actually block the hiking trails will not be moved, since they provide a lot of natural benefit, and only hamper photographers. As evidence, this tree across Punchbowl Falls has been there as long as I've been hiking that trail. Thanks for stopping by and any comments.

Nice capture Dennis. Very informative background. I think the log adds to the overall picture though, Sig...

Indeed, fallen trees are part of the natural landscape. If they clear the logs away from waterfalls, what's next? Weeding? It's a shame it fell right there, but that's all part of the process. Tree or no tree, this is a wonderful photograph! I love the greens against the white water. Beautiful!

A beautiful waterfall photo. As for cleaning up the fallen trees, I think they should be left where they fall. Man didn't fell the trees so man should leave them alone. That is what is natural.

The fallen trees add to the beauty of these natural scenes, and this really is a beauty! After the rains and storms you have had the past couple of winters, perhaps many places are not the same as before.

I actually rather like the break that the tree across this falls gives, it adds another perspective. And probably the squirrels like it too, since they can cross to the other side more easily now!

The many sharp rocks behind the falls really break it into a beautiful scene! Now, imagine a black bear cub crossing the stream on that tree trunk :D

But the beauty in nature is nature itself. Maybe a painter would remove that log in his final painting L .... I love it just the way it is! Natural! Terrific capture Dennis! It's beautiful! hehe tresamie ....bet Dennis won't be standing there when that cub walks across that fallen log G

Another beautiful picture, Dennis. I wonder how many "goofballs" will try and walk across this and fall in?

It could turn into a nurse log and start a whole new community of plants & trees? Who knows what nature has in store???? a beautiful image regardless!!!!!

Gorgeous shot! And i love the name of this fall. Here in Belgium we have one waterfall, I'm pretty sure that the Dutch don't even have a single one ;-) But hey, now they do ..lol

I think the tree adds to the picture. It is what it is. :-) And the waterfall is lovely. And the tree will have things growing on it soon, and birds and insects will sit on it.
