Description

When my children were little I read bedtime stories to them all together. Their favourites were those of Alan Garner - "Weirdstone of Brisingamen" "The Moon of Gomrath" ... the equivalent of Harry Potter - though in my opinion Alan Garner's language was much richer and his concepts more universal and open to discussion. Most of the stories were based on the legend of the "Wizard of Alderley" - Alderley Edge is a local sandstone bluff beauty spot where we often picniced. All the landmarks mentioned in the stories can easily be found - including the superb natural well above which is a stone slab engraved with a likeness of a wizard's head and these words: "Drink of this and take thy fill for the water falls by the wizhards will" 'wizhards's' is not a typo - that's exactly how it is written. In memory of happy days and happy children still young enough to face the world with confidence and wonder ...

Very captivating image Mike. That quality of automatic color harmony is so inherent in your images. It's like "just there". Viewed as a whole: the aestethics of design and artistry are in a seamless mesh here. "In memory of happy days and happy children still young enough to face the world with confidence and wonder ..." -How true ... How true. I've found out sometime ago that some things aren't meant to be explained because, wonderment just fizzles like air that's let-out of a balloon. best, -Julian

A wonderful piece of art depicting the wizard. I've never heard of these stories. But our Mom read to us almost every night at bedtime---fairy tales and other adventures and poetry. What a wonderful memory. As the years went by things changed in the culture and I found I did not have the time to read as often to my children at bedtime. Sad to think of the things the children of today may be missing from their lives.

The Magician card in tarot tells us to be the creators of our own realities. As so we are. Perhaps we can all learn from the children to be better creators. Love the art and the well was a magikal place indeed!
