Description

ROOTED Though the wilder winds within have gentled in the years and the bitter bile has dried I still endure. Though the tender tissues no longer tingle at the slightest touch and my rind is bleached bone-white I am rooted still. My roots are deep tight tangled in the mothering earth and the still rising sap succours and swells fast flourishing foliage brave against the world's weathers. Though my fierce face is raised to resist the shocks of storms, I have learned to bend beside the wind but I will not break. -------------------------------------------- I saw this tree against the skyline atop the sand dunes on the north-west cost of Jersey [Channel Islands, UK]. The tree was growing almost horizontally because of the strength of the prevailing winds - the windward side sand-blasted bare of bark and leaves, but the leeward side with full luxuriant foliage. A tree to live up to, methinks.

I adore trees, because they show all their scars of life so beautifully and bravely. A wonderful and worthy tree you have captured in your photo and your poem speaks to us all who have been bent by the winds of fate and keep growing. CC

The words to the poem really fit, after I read your closing lines about how the tree is still alive, at first glance I just figured the tree had died, or had been knocked down by a storm...... amazing how if still survives like that..

Beautiful metaphor. I thought, "Tree? What tree? He's been reading my mail again."

I have only once in my adult life been to my roots which are far from my maternal or paternal sites. Root hairs maybe. Once they are gone the tree dies.

Excellent eye you have for beauty in nature and correlating it to how we are enmeshed with it in our lives.

Mike, your poetry is always like a warm fuzzy blanket on the soul! You give me something to aspire to... always...~Michelle~
