Description

Hi, everyone, I've missed you all so very much!!! Everything is wonderful here in Oklahoma! This is a shot from last November that I had intended to post as soon as I was able to identify him.... I still haven't been able to discover what he is :( I've concluded that it's either a Merlin or possibly a Red Shouldered hawk but from what I've found on the web and my books I'm still undecided. Any help is appreciated and more than welcome. I was trying to get some shots of other birds when they all left and this one came swooping in and landed about 15 feet from my position so tilting the tripod back and shooting with the settings I had I was able to get about 3 shots off before he left again. I feel very fortunate :) Again, I thank you all for your comments and critiques and I've truly missed you all! Manning

Are you ready for it? I didn't think it was a red-shouldered hawk, we have them here in my woods and they are large like the red-tailed (which we also have). This one is rather small.... It is a female Kestrel. We have Kestrels around here also, I see them on the power lines here and there on the lookout for a meal... mostly the more colorful males though. Really great capture with lots of detail! You were indeed fortunate!

I don't think it's a Kestrel; the head shape seems wrong. I'd go with the Merlin, especially because of the white stripe over the eye. Beautiful shot, whoever he is.

Manning, it's wonderful to see a post from you again!!! Wonderful shot, considering that it was 'on the fly' so to speak, great job getting the shot before he left. I looked through my books, both the birds you mention have dark eyes. Maybe try looking for sharp-shinned or cooper's hawk, juvenile, which both winter in OK. Welcome back. :)

First, long time no see! Happy you are back, missed you too. This is a fabulous picture. I don't know which one , but he looks a lot like Falcon or in the family of hawk.

I'm so glad you are back! And back with a splash! This is a fabulous shot. Too bad the feet aren't included but on a chance meeting this is excellent. I like the warm sun lit leaves nearby that give the bird a warm glow as well!
