Description

So I'm cruising slowly around the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge looking for cute ducks or Bald Eagles or swans, and this Redtail Hawk swoops down and perches on a fencepost not 10 feet from the car, and he's even on my side! :-) In three minutes I took about 30 shots, most of them pretty good, if I say so myself. The Redtail is by far the most common hawk in North America; in fact, in Oregon if you see a hawk you assume it's a Redtail unless someone proves that it isn't. The tail is white underneath, red above. If you see on flying above in good light, you'll know where he got his name, as the red shows through and the tail fairly glows red. * Size: 45-65 cm (18-26 in) * Wingspan: 114-133 cm (45-52 in) * Weight: 690-1460 g (24.36-51.54 ounces) I think this guy was immature because of the amount of white in his plumage, but he was by no means a small bird. I was very impressed and very happy that he honored me with his presence. Thanks for stopping by and any comments.

Superb! I am so glad you were the photographer, if it was me, he would only be a blur (maybe kinda a spiral one). This is an amazing portrait :)

I cannot imagine how wonderful it would be to be able to take a shot of such a magnificent bird sitting just 10feet away! This is an excellent capture and I love it so much, a brilliant detailed photograph indeed - hugs Jane xx

Congratulations. I actually have alot of hawk sightings around here even on busy highways but while they can sit and ignore all the traffic the minute I pull over and try to take their picture, off they go. Excellent shot.
