Description

Picture taken last Saturday in Brussels (rue de l’Evêque) Cecilia, 31 years old, Liberia. « I was 15 years old. It was in 1992, and the war was raging in my country, Liberia. That evening, my mother sent me to do some trading in the street. The curfew was in force and no one was going out at such a late hour. A soldier caught me, and took me to the bush with six or seven other girls. He ordered me into a little room and told me to get undressed and lie down on the bed. He was armed; I was terrified.... He pushed me down and raped me. I didn’t even manage to clear up the flow of blood, I was in so much pain. I didn’t say anything to my mother. I consider myself strong. I’ve had three children and I’ve managed to get a little business going. My children go to school and I manage to feed them every day. I put money to one side for them, and for building a house one day. » "Women are heroes“ proclaim Médecins sans frontières (MSF) and the activist JR on the occasion of International Women’s Day. JR has visitedSierra Leone, Liberia, Southern Soudan and Kenya, returning with striking portraits of women taken with the help of his 28 millimetre lens. He wants to share their stories, first by exhibiting them in their country of origin, then in the framework of spectacular exhibitions hosted in several cities throughout the world. As from 8th March 2008, the faces and expressions of eight women are splashed accross the walls of Brussels. Their gigantic portraits will make their presence felt in the streets of the town centre reflecting how vital their role is in the daily routinesof their countries... Encore une image symbolique en hommage à une femme qui le mérite tellement... aux femmes que nous sommes également! Il est tellement rare que des Hommes pensent à nous... un cliché fort pour illuster celà, bravo Michel et zibous!

They say, men can never endure the pains women go through in life. I believe that. All our lives, we women have had to endure much hardships. But, life goes on. It has to. A great tribute to the women around the world. Aloha
