Description

Picture taken last Saturday (March 8th, 2008) in Brussels (rue Saint-Géry, 13) Hawa, 45 years old, Sierra Leone. « The attack took place on a saturday when the war was raging in my country, Liberia. I fled into the bush with four of my children and my husband, who was killed soon after. We joined a group of women who were also trying to flee. We were walking in the jungle when a group of rebels captured us. That night I was raped by five of them. One of them killed my nine year old son by cutting his throat under my very eyes. He forced me to laugh whilst watching the scene. With ten other women, I stayed there for five days, during which I was raped constantly. One night, we managed to escape. We gathered cassava as food. We spent nearly a month in the bush. We finally got to the Sierra Leone border by foot. » "Women are heroes“ proclaim Médecins sans frontières (MSF) and the activist JR on the occasion of International Women’s Day. JR has visitedSierra Leone, Liberia, Southern Soudan and Kenya, returning with striking portraits of women taken with the help of his 28 millimetre lens. He wants to share their stories, first by exhibiting them in their country of origin, then in the framework of spectacular exhibitions hosted in several cities throughout the world. As from 8th March 2008, the faces and expressions of eight women are splashed accross the walls of Brussels. Their gigantic portraits will make their presence felt in the streets of the town centre reflecting how vital their role is in the daily routinesof their countries... Large. I don't know if I would appreciate the view so much from that balcony though.
