Description

[best viewed full sized] Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura cornuta) This shot was taken last Sunday at Chester Zoo whilst out with Chrissy, aka BibbyBear, and she has also uploaded some pics into her gallery from this visit. This one was taken in the Tropical Realm where we seemed to spend most of our time. We only got to see about a fifth of the zoo in the four hours that we spent there, and we are already planning a trip back when the weather is a little warmer. The Rhinoceros Iguana is a threatened species of lizard that is mainly found on the Caribbean islands of Hispaniola, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. They vary in length from two to four and a half feet long, and skin colours range from a steely blue/grey to a dark green and even brown. Their name comes from the bony-plated outgrowth on the iguana's snout that resembles the horn of a rhinoceros. Males are highly territorial, larger than females, and develop larger horns. The lifespan of wild rhinoceros iguanas is not known, but a lifespan of twenty years has been recorded for some captive individuals. Thanks for looking and any comments and critique are more than welcome and valued!

Awesome macro Carl, I am planning on a visit to Chester Zoo myself but not until the 29th April. Alan(artaddict2) and I am having a day out down there, it must be about 18/19 years since my last visit. We are going to Crich this Bank Holiday Monday, they are having a WWII weekend, so hope to get plenty of army pics. It's a great day out if you haven't been before, it will be my third and Alans second visit. Superb work and nice information. Bravo!!!!!
