Born in Hilo, Hawaii and class of '66, I became very active in Barbells, Judo and love striking the heavy/speed bag. I've learned to Rollerblade and bike ride which is a very health sport. But time doesn't stop for anyone including for me. So my good friend Dave aka punaguy got me started in taking pictures. I'm having fun taking pictures especially hiking the mountains. I'm enjoying seeing the world thru your post on Renderosity. Mahalo and Aloha....Errol

Is there any recompense to those who lose their property to lava? How do the lava tubes come to be hollow if lava is still flowing through them? Great shot!

Like chocolate frosting on top of a huge cake! Superlative clarity, lighting and textural effects in this photo, Shark!

Maria....As for how close to the lava and what kinds of sounds? Most times it depends on what direction the wind is blowing as to how close you can get. Some of my pictures were taken about 5 feet away from the lava ooze but only for a brief second. The heat will burn the hairs off from our legs. I'm worried about our cameras too, lol As for what kind of sounds lava makes...........really no sounds at all. The only sounds you hear is what the lava cause such as pushing fragments of rocks away, rocks breaking caused by the pressure of lava, the heat onto cold surface or water causing a crackling sound, air trapped in rocks (popping sounds) and sometimes methane explosions. I know there is a roar like a freight train when there is an eruption or lava spurting out of the earth. But lava far away from the source has basically no sound.... Thanks for asking PJ...If the family had insurance, then their is hope. If not, then all is lost. As for how the lava tube becomes hollow? The source of lava is coming out from fissures or cracks in the earth. As the outer surface of lava hardens, it will trap and keep the lava within hot and fluid. Because of gravitation, the hot fluid lava will flow down hill. If the fissures or source of lava stops, the lava left in the tube will continue to flow downwards (still fluid and hot) and in our case here, flows out and empties into the sea. Similar to a long water hose.....turn off the faucet and the water will continue to flow out leaving the water hose empty. Hope I answered your question. Aloha

I wonder if any others are in the path?? It's hard to imagine anyone would live in a spot like this?? I take it they got out with their lives? Very interesting lava info Errol, you always amaze us with these shots!!!! thank you my friend for keeping us informed too!!! Aloha...

Another superb lava capture Errol! It is beautiful to look at and very sad about it's destructive power! Excellent capture my friend!

Akemi...yes, there are more homes and building structures in the area. If the lava shifts in direction, then they are in danger. Aloha

great and dangerous landscape

lol sad news and a wonder in nature here too. we got to be in awl and watch out for we got no control in this stuff. I know in Iceland they stop lava flow from coming into town by spaying sea water on it and change the way the lava way flowing. Gyuess that cost too much just for a few houses but a town maybe worth it.

LOL@jocko....can you spare about 6 miles of water hose?

Oh sharky .......I'm so sorry for the property lost! I do hope everyone escaped unharmed! ... I know you have been inundated with questions ... and of course, I could (instead of being lazy) research but YOU already know L ....... ?? How long of a notice do most residents get that they need to evacuate?
sharky_
onefeather...I'm not sure how much time civil defense will give notice to the property owners. The people are well aware and on high alert that at a moments notice, they must evacuate if they haven't done so already.
