Description

The two extant species of seriema are thought to be the closest living relatives of a group of gigantic (up to ten feet tall carnivorous "terror birds).!! Despite this fearsome past and the fact they are a predatory species they are in my view a rather beutiful with striking featurea such as the crest, which is unique among South American birds. The crest is comprised of permanently raised slightly stiff feathers at the base of the bill which can reach 10 cm in length. Seriemas are one of the few birds with eyelashes. Seriemas have loose plumage, especially on the neck and underparts. They are mainly grey in colouration, with shades of brown, except the abdomen which is white. The wing and tail feathers are banded black and white. The skin surrounding the eye is blue and the iris of the eye can vary from yellow to blue grey. The bill and legs are both an orange red. Thanks as always for taking time to look and any comments etc best viewed at full size

Wow! This looks like the wife all dolled up ready for a night out lol. Eye shadow, mascara and a bit of red lip gloss, typical bird.roflmao. Fun aside Danny, superb capture of this beautiful bird, I know women that would kill for eye lashes as long as those, another new breed for me as well. Looking at the beak I would not want to get on the wrong side of this bird, thats for sure. Superb! Bravo!!!!!

Gosh, I'd love to see this one hunting. I bet it's something. Is this more related to the hawk or the falcon family? I was wondering about the body structure...long and lean or compact and broad. A real teaser of a shot. :-) I love the detail you got including the eyelashes. That's amazing...
