Description

Captured this female Barn owl early on a Misty morning via a bag hide she had caught some prey but rather too small to see in her clutched claws on her way back to the nest. Barn owls are crepuscular meaning that they are active before dawn and at twilight. This corresponds with the times of greatest activity of voles, shrews and mice. Their flight is purposeful; barn owls are creatures of habit, preferring to hunt a well-known territory where their success rate is guaranteed. They will repeatedly fly back and forth over an area, a technique known as ‘quartering’. They glide a few feet above the ground, sometimes stalling, twisting and cartwheeling until they locate a target. They will then hover before plunging for the prey. Thanks for taking time to view and any comments etc. And apologies for not being around much the last day or two.. Had to fix some PC and net problems

You have once again, posted my favorite owl of all time. We have a pair that hunts over the house and their calls are something to hear. My little dogs cringe when they hear that call. I have always looked at their faces as looking like those "Mexican Jumping Beans" we used to get as a kid (they were really a nut or seed with tiny worms inside that made them move in your hand when it was warmed...) This shot is so awesome. I've also watched them in the fields when they spot their dinner. They really are all about business!

Absolutely beautiful shot! I may have already mentioned that Bournemouth Parks and Countryside put up a Barn owl box on the junction of the woods and the watermeadows, and it was occupied the same year! It means that ordinary folk can see them at work if they turn ou at the right time!

Excellent timing and a great capture like always. They are also very threatened where I live. Various things amongst others poisoning and traffic makes it almost impossible for them to survive in the wild. Good luck with your computer and network blues.

Stunning capture Danny, it's amazing whats out there if you know where to look, I used to love going to an old derelict mill, burned down when I was a kid, there used to be a kestrel that nested there, high up in one of the recesses where one of the beams had been. Pretty close by was a mill pond that had overgrown and become swampy at one end, the kestrel used to hover there for ages before spotting something and diving down to snatch it up. I could sit on the hill and watch it through the binoculars for ages. Seeing this and reading your narrative, brings back memories of long ago, thank you kindly sir. Superb capture and presentation with a very informative narrative. Bravo!!!!!

My word! What a great shot, absolute perfection! Even at 400mm, the hide allowed you to get this amazing shot at a relatively close distance. A little bit of luck and a lot of talent!
