Description

This is the Rosswood Plantation, located near Port Gibson in southwest Mississippi. Rosswood was a thriving pre-Civil War plantation on 1,250 acres of land. Although no longer a working plantation, it looks pretty much the same as it did over 150 years ago. Rosswood has more history than I can possibly address here. It was involved in a Civil War battle and attacked with cannon fire from Union Forces. Also during the war it experienced a slave revolt of over 100 men, and then later functioned as a war hospital for both Union and Confederate soldiers. It even has ghosts, thrilling romance stories, and a still lost buried treasure! The classic Greek revival style home has 14 rooms with 14 feet ceilings, 10 fireplaces, two columned galleries, and a winding stairway. The basement was the location of the slave quarters, and after the war the hired hands resided there. The acres surrounding the estate have an abundance of wildlife. In the evening as you spend time on the upstairs gallery rocking chairs while sipping some fine red wine, along with the crickets you can hear the coyotes howling out in the darkness, and not that far from the house! This is where Leah & I had the pleasure of spending last weekend. Rosswood today is a bed & breakfast, and after a weekend in the area you feel as if you've slipped back in time. Things just move slower there, and it's so peaceful these days. This week it's been difficult as we've had to force ourselves back into our insane, frantic, modern lifestyle. In my mind I'm still back at Rosswood. It's Sunday morning and we're out on the upstairs gallery, sipping our morning coffee while watching the morning mist as the Spanish moss gracefully drapes from the surrounding giant oak trees. Suddenly we hear Peggy holler out, "C'mon downstairs ya'll! Breakfast is ready!" Peggy's breakfast by itself is worth the visit. We plan on returning this fall. This is actually two shots stitched together, but it would take 5 or 6 shots to even begin to reveal the vastness and beauty of Rosswood. marshall

Beautiful capture! The architecture is wonderful - it's exactly what I think of when I think Southern Plantation.

A place of lyrical beauty, and you've captured it so vividly in both picture and prose that I almost have a sense of being there. If I get a chance to go through Mississippi this will be an absolutely essential place to visit! Thanks for sharing this magnificent place.
