Description

This 10th century round tower is located in Glendalough and is 33m high and 16m in circumference. The upper stories and conical roof were reconstructed in 1876. This site includes among other ruins the remains of seven churches and a monastic graveyard. It is part of the Wicklow Mountains National Park. This picture was taken in May 1998 and later scanned. A nice capture of the iconic Glendalough tower, Siegfried. I saw it only last night on a program on BBC TV, over here in Scotland. The program was charting the history of harps and harp music from Ancient Egypt and the Near East, through Ethiopia, to the classic Celtic harp, then into France, Germany and Spain. It ended in Venezuela, where the indigenous people copied the Spanish version and made it their own national instrument. Glendalough is one of those places that one wishes to visit, when one retired. You did it before you retired, I see. I have never been so busy, nor had so little time, even for holidays, since I retired from the police force. Ah well, someday.. Thanks for sharing this photo, my friend. Warm regards, from a snowy Glasgow, John.

Glendalough ! Another Irish landmark I failed to visit but there you are to enchant my eyes with your superb capture of it. It's a great shot and reminiscent of the role Irish monks played right from the early Middle Ages in Europe.Bravo Sig!

Greetings Siegfried, I have not been to Scotland (?) as I take this image was taken there. However I have been to Ireland backpacking through the country side and sleeping in graveyards, places I always considered save. Besides I felt there is always some magic about sites like these. Thank you for sharing and have a great week. egmont

@cameraobscura2. Egmont, this place is in the Wicklow Mountains, Ireland, south of Dublin. There are also some round towers in Scotland, Sig..

Superb tower and a great narrative, quite interesting that John has just seen it mentioned on the BBC program. I always love walking round graveyards taking in the different headstones, especially the older ones. Great pov and capture. Bravo!!!!!

superb capture and the graves must be very old.I wonder what the tower was used for.I will google it to find out The Bell Tower at Glendalough was seven stories high, a sacred number in the Middle Ages. The number four symbolized the perfection of the material world, as there are four cardinal directions, and four ancient elements. The number three symbolized the perfection of the spiritual realm, as three was the number of persons in the Trinity. Seven was the product of adding four and three, and so symbolized the perfection of the cosmos. The Bell Tower has 4 windows, one facing each direction. They were used for storage, but also for refuge during time of attack.a ladder was needed to enter the door

I really find this fascinating. The tower is so very different from the rest of the ruins. It does seem to be rich in history in this particular place. Wonderful capture that includes many historical pieces in one.
