Description

Michael Schumacher making a pit stop during Saturday's Free Practice for the 2005 USGP in Indianapolis. This was the last year when Formula 1 used 3 litre V-10, normally aspirated engines producing about 900-950hp for the races. It was also the year when Ralph Schumacher crashed into the wall at the turn leading into the start-finish stretch at almost 200mph after a Michelin tire failure. As a result, 16 cars, all using Michelin tires, boycotted the race, after Michelin could not guaranty that the sidewalls of the supplied tires would be able to handle the sideloads generated in turns. Therefore only six cars started the race which Michael Schumacher won. This was also the year Fernando Alonso won his first World Championship in Formula 1 driving a Renault. This picture was taken on 17 June 2005. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my previous uploads. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS FOR ALL THAT CARE AND ARE FANS OF THIS SPORT! I was fortunate enough to see a Formula 1 race in 1954 on the AVUS in Berlin. This race was not part of the normal circuit of the series, but that year it had been added for one year. My father and I went. We brought potato salad and cold, breaded koteletts to eat, and water to drink and brought our own folding chairs. No fancy food stands then! Safety was practically non-existing by todays standard. We stood behind a 4-ft. concrete barrier and the race cars were not more than about 25-ft. away. The AVUS was part of the autobahn that started at the Funkturm and the race track was about 8km long, about 4km in each direction. Our location was 800m short of the southern turn around, a flat U-turn. The northern turn-around was a high banked, brick-lined curve, the Nordschleife, that over the years killed many drivers, including Jean Behra in 1959. In 1954 we were introduced in the pre-race to racing greats such as Alberto Ascari and Rudolph Carrachiola. The race was won by the new Mercedes 'Silverpfeile' driven by Juan Manual Fangio, Kling, and Lang who finished 1,2, and 3 respectively. Jean Behra kept up with them for a while, but his Maserati expired near our location, and we watched him climb out and walk back toward the start. The crowd cheered him for his effort. The pace set during that race made the AVUS the fastest track at the time, beating the record that was held by the 'brickyard' in Indianapolis. From the moment I saw this race, I was sold on this form of racing and am still a fan today that can't wait for the season to open each year. I remember listening to the announcer reporting the start over the loudspeaker. It took very little time to reach our location, and passing us at around 200mph. I distinctly remember the sound-and the smell of the special race fuel. The few cars that were then on the roads in Germany were barely able to reach 100km/h and here these cars were racing at 300km/h. Juan Manual Fangio went on to become a five time world champion, a record that stood for nearly half a century before Michael Schumacher became seven time world champion. There have been many great drivers since then, the greatest I have seen racing include the great Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell to name only a few. KarmaSong is right, this upload should also come with a soundtrack, but then of course we also would need hearing protection. Thanks for all the comments by the obvious racing fans. As far as I am concerned, that is an instant bond we have formed.

I once took some of my students to Brand's Hatch to see the free practice before a competition of Formula 3000 and it was quite something too! My conclusion after seeing this beautiful photo is: it's a pity we can't add the soundtrack to a photo like this, and you know why, Sig!

this brings back memories of when I done photography for a Busch series racing team. one long weekend we raced in College station and also Austin. the stupid film developers stoled 9 out of 13 rolls of film from me.our driver won the race of champions in College station(all total 5 times out of 8 races) the car was sold to a 1/2 partner and his son was in a wreck at College station and caused the death of another driver superb photography

Great shot! Yeah, that tyre thing was a fiasco. Looks like you might have got Jean Todd walking away in the back-left there.
