Description

"Did you hear that?" "They've shut down the main reactor - we'll be destroyed for sure!" "There'll be no escape for the Princess this time..." I first heard these lines in May of 1977 and my world changed for ever. Star Wars can have that effect on an eleven year old. I guess that qualifies as inspiration for sure... This is the latest installment in what is becoming the 'inspired lack of inspiration' series - a series of renders in Vue 6i featuring free models from various sources. So, while the muse is away I am making do with some (hopefully) cool images and getting better with Vue6i... time very much not wasted. Vue seems to play really well on my Pentium Quad core and seems most happy with 4gb of RAM. This is the 'Rebel Blockade Runner' available from Vanishingpoint - check the freestuff here. Excellent model - fifty two material zones :) I did some work with procedural diffuse, bump and specular values to bring out the texturing a bit (See previous 'Sulaco' image for a more detailed explination) and there are ten point lights accomplishing the engine glow. Tatooine was done in Vue from a short tutorial in 3DWorld #102 (I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of that little tutorial) - Start with basic spectral atmosphere and take the camera up to 10 km. There was a lot of tweaking on this atmosphere to get it looking thin and dry. Some small smattering of cirris clouds in there, and always crank the quality settings on the spectral atmosphere up to +4 for final rendering. The planet's textures are a couple of the "terra-mats" included in Chipp Walters excellent TerraVue product. The whole thing was rendered out at double the current resolution using global illumination and high quality settings in about two hours. I composited that in Photoshop with a starfield created in POV-Ray and did some level adjustments. I also added a light layer of noise to give a bit of a film grain to it, although this may have been lost when it was compressed to upload here. At 1920 x 1200 there is a lot more detail in the full view. My thanks again to everyone for their support and comments on this series. Now where did I put that Stardestroyer? Oh and yes, there are two suns :)

The princess will escape eventually. We know she always does. Beautiful details on the starship and wonderful lighting effects on the planet.

Hello Mr. theSea, As you know I am always liking your work. I guess I just can't seem to do that thing where all I say is nice things. So here goes, and understand I am an amateur and ingrate. 1) I know the planet is all dusty and such, but the atmo seems "too" thick, I would expect that thinner would make the edges of the planet more visible and would also take care of the extra blurry-ness on the star side. 2) the flight angle 'feels' weird, How's that for clarity in comments? 3) the deck plating bumps/disp appears to be different scales on different pieces, this might have been intentional 4) You say two suns, but the shadows don't seem distinct enough for me to place them in my mental reconstruction of the scene As for the great parts 1) I love the engine glow effects 2) The planet surface where visible is exactly what I would expect to see on Tatooine 3) love the model and the way it's done, I expect the textures are your own or mods of the ones that came with the model, they show your constant attention to detail and are really nice -Synapse001

52 material zones!!! Good golly. Your point light glow is wonderful. I'm a sucker for cool lighting. Great job on Tatooine. The level of detail you were able to pull out of the model is exceptional. Your practice with Vue has been very well spent.

what is it with boys and Star Wars?? I can remember when I first saw Star Wars too, but unlike my brother, I don't watch the films religiously and speak the dialogue out loud. LOL! I really love the engine flares on this - fantastic effect! I love doing sci fi but I hardly ever do anything with a spaceship in it, but I so love seeing renders of them! Beautiful render!
