Basingwerk Abbey, North Wales (or its Welsh title: Abaty Dinas Basing)
When visiting old ruins like this I often wonder how it would have looked during its working life and what sort of activities would have been undertaken in and around it. In another train of thought I wonder what the people living in these buildings, all those centuries ago, would think if they could see them today. Would the old monks whose world revolved around the monastic life be dismayed by the shell of its former self that it is today or would they be far more philosophical about it?
Basingwerk Abbey was founded in 1131 by Ranulf, earl of Chester, as a 'daughter' of Savigny Abbey in western Normandy. In 1147, however, the Savigniac order merged with the Cistercians, and in 1157 Basingwerk was affiliated with Buildwas in Shropshire, also a former Savigniac house. Much of the plan at Basingwerk follows the standard Cistercian layout.
Only a little of the 12th-century walling apparently survives, around the cloister and in the east range. Much of the fabric visible today, including the church, dates from the early 13th century, when the buildings were generally refurbished and extended.
The life of the abbey came to an end with Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. The roof of the abbey went to Cilcain church and the majestic Jesse Window went to the church at Llanrhaeadr-yng-Ngheinmeirch.

I really like this capture Carl and although not the more "obvious" POVs of perhaps a straight down perspective shot or a diagonal, across the picture shot, your POV in my opinion, allows a more speculative view - I'm not sure if it conforms to the dreaded rule of thirds however, you have certainly created a scene of thirds by breaking up the picture with the walls, grass and sky. Having the extra grass on the left also adds more colour with that lush greenery and the tree-lined horizon leading the eye comfortably to the perfect blue sky with lovely fluffy clouds yet the sky being clear over the ruins themselves, doesn't distract from seeing the stunning details in the textures of the stones. A marvellously thought out composition and having personally been to these ruins (spending much of my early childhood climbing these walls!), you have created a scene that truly represents the atmosphere found there and I find myself almost entranced. An excellent capture that my eyes just want to continue to wander! Hugs Chrissy xox

I love the contrasts here; the warm coloured stone, against that cold looking sky, and the general sense of age and ruin amongst the new, healthy young grass! Love it!
