Description
There was a soldier,
A Scottish soldier
Who wandered far away
And soldiered far away
There was none bolder,
With good broad shoulder
He's fought in many a fray,
And fought and won.
He'd seen the glory
And told the story
Of battles glorious
And deeds neforious
But now he's sighing,
His heart is crying
To leave these green hills of Tyrol.
Chorus
Because these green hills
Are not highland hills
Or the island hills,
The're not my land's hills
And fair as these green foreign hills may be
They are not the hills of home.
2. And now this soldier,
This Scottish soldier
Who wandered far away
And soldiered far away
Sees leaves are falling
And death is calling
And he will fade away,
In that far land.
He called his piper,
His trusty piper
And bade him sound a lay
A pibroch sad to play
Upon a hillside,
A Scottish hillside
Not on these green hills of Tyrol.
Chorus
3. And so this soldier,
This Scottish soldier
Will wander far no more
And soldier far no more
And on a hillside,
A Scottish hillside
You'll see a piper play
His soldier home.
He'd seen the glory,
He'd told his story
Of battles glorious
And deeds victorious
The bugles cease now,
He is at peace now
Far from those green hills of Tyrol.
Chorus
I thought this song fitting, as the people in this parade, for some of them their thoughts were far away, way back in the 40's.
Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make.
May the sun shine down on you, where ever you are.

For those of you that's interested, the full song can be heard here, although it is much better with the pipes playing. Just follow the link and click on audio. http://www.incallander.co.uk/scottishsongs/song13.htm It was made famous by Andy Stewart, I realise that he was way before some of you were born.

A wonderful tribute to the Scottish soldier Jeff. It harkens back to the time when 'The sun never set on the British Empire'. When Scottish and British soldiers served, and fought, all over the world. John Master's books about British life in India, which chronicles one family through the centuries in India, reflect a lot of what you are showing us here. John Masters by the way was born of a British Family in India and, after graduating from Sandhurst, served in India himsel until 1947. Bag pipes give the chills, just as the bugle played at a funerals does. The pictures are great and look good in sepia, Sig..
