Description

After a long absence I return here to RRosity to post an historical image. Sorry to all the friends for my delay in putting comments on their images... I was very busy last weeks LOL IMPORTANT: THIS 3D MODEL IS AVAILABLE AS A FREEBIE IN MY HOMEPAGE HERE ON RENDEROSITY... http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/index.php?section_id=298& I created it in 3dsmax but the model is available for POSER 6 and higher, DAZ and VUE 6. Enjoy it! SOME HISTORICAL NOTES FROM WIKIPEDIA AND OTHER WEBSITES. The Ponte Vecchio (Italian for Old Bridge) is a Medieval bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers. The bridge spans the Arno at its narrowest pointwhere it is believed that a bridge was first built in Roman times, when the via Cassia crossed the river at this point. The Roman piers were of stone, the superstructure of wood. The bridge first appears in a document of 996.After being destroyed by a flood in 1117 it was reconstructed in stone but swept away again in 1333 save two of its central piers, as noted by Giovanni Villani in his Nuova Cronica. It was rebuilt in 1345. In 1565 the architect Giorgio Vasari built at the upper floor a corridor in order to connect the Palazzo Vecchio (Florence's town hall) with the Palazzo Pitti. During World War II, the Ponte Vecchio was not destroyed by Germans during their retreat of August 4, 1944, unlike all other bridges in Florence. This was allegedly because of an express order by Hitler. Thank you for viewing... Comments are welcome!

interesting. I'd heard that it was ordered destroyed, but that the local commander couldn't bring himself to do it, so he blew up the houses at each end. Been there meself, cool place...
