Description

Life is the same thing at times—the repetition of yesterday's action on a lousy but new winter's morning. At such times, when work is what you make it, and money comes when it may, you duck into a courtyard to take an account of your day's earnings. You keep everything written in you small, worn pad. The day is young. You've just made 300 Koruni: not a bad start, for a morning the color of pigeon drops. When your account for the moment is finished, you light a cigarette and speak with the receptionist in a courtyard-fronting office. You share smoke with her. You share dreams of being somewhere else. You glance up, and see that the sky will soon fulfill it's promise of rain. You finish your cigarette and bid the bored receptionist farewell. “Ciao,” you say, and then repeat departing courtesies in your own, more uncommon language. You pinch the cherry from your cigarette butt and step on it, throwing what remains in the rubbish bin. You head next door, to the bar where everyone goes, and you sit alone at one of the smaller tables. You light another cigarette. You drink a cup of coffee, reading a ratty, ruffled newspaper, its name “DNES” boldly emblazoned through a neat tear on the front page. You've just made 300 Koruni. Coffee costs 30. Your day has just begun. There will be other breaks. There will be other cups of coffee in other bars. Because life is the same thing at times—the repetition of yesterday's actions on a lousy but new winter's morning. There is comfort in that. And there will always be cigarettes and ripped newspapers. There will always be coffee in small ceramic cups.

Very well done narrative to go along with your capture, Chip. Also like the way you have done this one in B&W monotones. Captures the mood of the narrative very effectively.

Chip, you're marvellous! It's a nice photo, well in tradition of urban b/w photography; and there are words to go with it, words I do not find words to describe. You take the pic's mood and make something more of it. Something moving, something touching, a world. Marvellous! Once again marvellous.

A good use of monochrome to capture this city image. Your writing compliments it well.

You've captured this so well, from the B&W to the story to the whole feel of the foto. I'm sitting here with MY coffee (albeit not with a smoke or in a bar),and I can truly sense the mood!!

There's something in an image that only B&W can portray, your words only emphasise this. Beautifully written, you have a talent for drawing the reader in.
